Berlin mayor welcomes Guggenheim lab
BERLIN (AP) — Berlin's mayor is welcoming a decision by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to choose a new Berlin location for a traveling design and discussion project after some local groups' hostility prompted it to abandon the first-choice site.
Organizers announced Tuesday that the BMW Guggenheim Lab will visit the capital's Prenzlauer Berg district June 15-July 29.
It had abandoned previous plans to set up the structure in Kreuzberg, a Berlin counterculture enclave, citing "threats against the project." Groups denouncing gentrification and rising rents had protested.
Mayor Klaus Wowereit said the project is good for Berlin. He pointed to a need to counter "those who generally reject change and development" and seek to prevent discussions. He added: "intolerance of this kind must have no chance in Berlin."
